I have been selling online for many years. I always take photos outside in natural light whenever possible. Sometimes that isn’t possible, or an item just doesn’t work in natural lighting. I made a REALLY cheap light box at home that works great.
You will need:
- cardboard box
- white tissue paper or muslin cloth
- white poster board with matte finish
- packing or masking tape
- 2 desk lights
- utility knife (exacto knife)
I made two boxes, one larger and one smaller. As you can see from my box, it is nothing fancy, and the box that I had was pretty worn. It still works though!
On both sides and the top, measure 1-1/2 inches from the edge all the way around and cut out. I found it easiest to cut one side, then just use that cut out piece on the other sides to draw around, then cut out.
Place that cut out piece on 3 sheets of tissue paper and cut about 1″ around each side. If your box is rectangle, then the top will be a smaller piece. Place one sheet over a hole and tape along one edge. Tape the opposite side tugging until snug, then tape the sides.
Cut the white poster board to fit in the box and up the back. Have the board curve, but not crease or it will show in the photo. You can use other colors for different backgrounds.
Place two desks lights on each side shining through tissue paper. Experiment with what wattage to use. I have 100 watt bulbs in mine, but still have a little shadows happening. I just need to experiment with the light placement. You can have a light from the top also. I left the flaps on so it would further block light.
Since it is cheap to make, you can experiment with different materials, colors, and bulbs. It may not look like the professional boxes, but works for me!
