How I Made My Own Photo Canvas

How I Made My Own Photo Canvas

I had a company make a photo canvas for me and it cost a small fortune!  So, I set out to make my own.  After researching, I found many ways to do it on Pinterest, of course.  This one worked great for me and was super easy!

For the first time, my son Benjamin was getting a bedroom all to himself.  They had always shared rooms, until two went off to college.  I wanted to surprise him so I painted the walls, and decided to try some canvases of he and his girlfriend.

Print the photo to the size of your canvas.  You can trim it to fit.  I had mine printed at Walmart because I don’t have a laser printer.   I chose black and white photos, because they look more like an old time canvas.  I did do one color photo because it looked like a hand colored black and white photo and thought it would fit in with the theme.

There are a couple ways to do it.  Have your photo a little bit larger than the canvas and fold the edges over, or have it a little smaller like I did, and apply paint to the borders.  Since I was going for old time, I chose the second route.

After it was fully dry, I took a small painting sponge, or you could use a stenciling brush, and dabbed white paint on the edges to make them look faded or old.

I love the way they turned out and it was so inexpensive!  You can do so many variations.  Try painting the canvases first, for color on the sides!

  1. LOVE this idea and will be using it! I am a beginning photographer with not a lot of money to spare and this is a great idea! I am in a great camera club and we have contest nights every month, then a final one at end of year. This would be a great alternative to display the winning photos at home in a
different way. Thanks for the idea!

    • I had copies made at Walmart, so they would be photo paper.
