Tim loves Ham and Beans! Me? Not so much. However, I am always up for making something in the crock pot. This is an easy cheap recipe that you can make without soaking beans.
In the crockpot combine:
- 1 package beans (1 pound). I used navy beans – Make sure they are rinsed!
- 1 -2 pounds ham shank or hock
- 2 tsp. onion powder
- 6 cups water
You can add pepper and salt, although I wouldn’t add salt until the end. The ham is very salty.
Cook in the crock pot on low for 8 hours or more until beans are tender.
Some people are concerned about the beans not boiling to kill whatever might be on them. If this is you, turn the crock pot on high and let boil for a couple hours. This would reduce the cooking time. If you aren’t worried about that, I would go the slow cooking way!
